Sandra combined her passion for volunteering with newly acquired skills to become more marketable in today’s job market. “I have a treasury and clerical background. My volunteer work was in these areas; however, I knew I had to elevate my administrative skills to find a job. So, I mastered the administrative part by taking classes which made me more desirable to potential employers,” said Sandra. In addition, Sandra identified her area of expertise, what it was worth and how to sell those skills to potential employers. It sure worked for Sandra!

“My employment journey took a different turn than most. I was a full time mom and did plenty of volunteer work. I returned to work for a short while, then was out of a job for almost three years, working seasonal positions,” shared Sandra.

As a volunteer for GO! Network, Sandra’s strong work ethic got noticed. Soon she was recommended for a job through a local contact who needed a strong administrative assistant. But according to Sandra, GO! Network offered her even more than a job lead, “GO! Network gave me a chance to put my skills to use and helped me regain more confidence in my abilities.”

Sandra found GO! Network seminars a source of strength and wisdom. She liked being around others who, by sharing openly, encouraged her during tough times. “GO! Network taught me to change my old tactics. I learned better ways to find a job from resume building and on-line searches to interviewing,” Sandra said.

Here’s Sandra’s best advice for others seeking employment:

  • Do a little volunteer work and you will be rewarded.“If you cast your bread on the waters not many days hence it will come back to you.”
  • You never know where you will find your next job, do your best at everything. Aim to please even if you don't get paid for what you do. Value the work you do and you will be of more value to an employer.
  • Continue to prepare yourself so you will be ready when you find your new job.If it means educating yourself in another area of your passion, do that as you can work to find your dream job or business. This, for some of us, is survival time. God will help you if you allow Him to. I believe hard work, faith and having a giving spirit helped me find my job.
